Until recently, we have focused on maintaining our 811 apartments as well as continuing and expanding our five (5) voucher management programs. Now we are seeking new opportunities to provide affordable housing to our clients
CHN has been awarded another HUD 811 grant for $1.8 million dollars to develop an apartment for the mentally ill. The new development, Swope Gardens, will be built on land purchased from a Swope Health Service partner. It will be a 15-unit building that provides independent housing for individuals who are clients of Swope Behavioral Health.
Amethyst Place is a program for recovering mothers with children who are homeless. It is a transitional living program designed to help residents move toward independent living. It is operating at half of its capacity because of limited space in its present location. CHN was contacted to assist them in resolving this problem. We will be working with their board to build a new 16 unit home using mixed financing.
- Forensic Transitional Housing
There is a dire need for transitional housing to serve those mentally ill ex-offenders who are working with case managers to rebuild their lives after release from prison. CHN has located land to build a six (6) unit building for this purpose. Meetings with the neighborhood have been supportive of such a project. The Department of Corrections and the Department of Mental Health Forensic Division will be actively involved.
The Kansas City Housing Authority has awarded forty-four (44) Section 8 subsidies to Community Housing Network. We are presently searching for three 15- unit buildings, which will include office space. We will purchase and renovate them to use these vouchers to house our clients. Service providers have expressed a need for additional units so we expect that the referrals will provide a high occupancy rate.
We are looking at serving different segments of our client base as we develop new initiatives. That's what's on the drawing board as Community Housing Network moves forward to provide affordable housing opportunities to the mentally ill.
