Over the past four years, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Multi-Family Hub has awarded $5.5 million to CHN to build 811 developments.
An 811 development is a multi-unit, newly-built facility built by a nonprofit to enable people with disabilities to live independently with dignity.
The grants provide capital advance money to cover land purchase, the cost of construction and furnishings for common areas. It does not have to be repaid as long as the housing is available for occupancy by very low-income people with disabilities for at least 40 years. Rental subsidies cover the difference between residents' portion of the rent (usually no more than 30 percent of the adjusted income) and the amount covered by HUD.
Each 811 development has a support component. CHN's role is that of developer/owner; CHN has partnered with recognized community programs to provide the resident support.
Each 811 is purposefully located to cover an identified part of the metro area. CHN has partnered with community mental health programs that have stellar reputations.
- Sunrise House is located in Independence. Community Housing Network is pleased to partner with Comprehensive Mental Health Services for client support.
- Holiday Place is located in South Kansas City. Recognized for excellence throughout the region, ReDiscover and Common Ground provide the support for the residents.
- Spruce Landing is located in the Northland. CHN strategically partners with Tri-County Mental Health for resident support.
- Rosewood is located in Midtown. Known citywide for their client-centered approach, Truman Behavioral Health provides resident support.
Community Housing Network believes that providing this type of multi-unit housing for the disabled is a win-win situation: a win for the community and a win for the clients we serve.
